2025: Centenary of the Beatification of Bernadette Soubirous

2025 is a very special year for pilgrims to Rome as we celebrate the Jubilee of Hope but also in Lourdes, as the Shrine celebrates an important highlight: the centenary of the beatification of Bernadette Soubirous in June 1925.

Bernadette Soubirous was declared Blessed by Pope Pius XI on 14th June 1925, a hundred years ago and an Exceptional Triduum takes place in Lourdes from 12th to the 14th June.

Centenary of the beatification of Bernadette Soubirous Lourdes Joe Walsh Tours

There will be daily events over the course of three days, where pilgrims are invited to experience key moments in the life of St Bernadette, following in her footsteps:

  • Jubilee Way
  • In Bernadette Steps, visiting places of relevance during her life in Lourdes and beyond
  • Mass at the Rosary Basilica
  • Rosary at the Grotto
  • Catechesis on the message of Lourdes centred on Saint Bernadette
  • Prayer vigils, candlelit processions and reflection at the relics of Bernadette will take place in the evenings.
  • Thanksgiving Mass: A grand Thanksgiving Mass at the Grotto will mark the high point of these historic celebrations on 14th June, as well as a Marian procession with the relics of St Bernadette.
  • Exhibition: There is also an open-air exhibition, in partnership with the Convent of Saint-Gildard in Nevers and the Sanctuary’s archives and heritage department, that pilgrims can see on the walls of the Saint Bernadette church, opposite the Grotto.

These are some of the places that tell the story of St Bernadette:

  • The Grotto of Massabielle, where Our Lady appeared to Bernadette in 1858
  • Her birthplace at the Boly Mill
  • The Cachot, where she lived in deep poverty with her family
  • The parish church where she was baptized
  • Moulin Lacade, the recently restored house where her parents lived after the apparitions
  • The hospital chapel where she received her First Communion
  • Bartrès, the little mountain village of only about 500 inhabitants where Bernadette Soubirous spent some of her childhood at the home of Marie Aravant.
  • The Saint-Gildard Convent in Nevers, where Bernadette she joined the Sisters of Charity to take care of the sick and poor; and where her body rests today.
