Padre Pio Pilgrimage – Celebrate the Feast of St Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo Itinerary

DAY 1 – Pietrelcina & San Giovanni Rotondo

Early departure from Dublin Airport onboard the Ryanair flight at 06:20am. We are scheduled to arrive in Naples at approximately 10:30am, giving us a full day ahead.

Upon arrival, our Joe Walsh Tours representative will be there to warmly welcome us. After collecting our luggage from the carousel, we will begin our journey by private coach to San Giovanni Rotondo.

During our transfer, ample opportunity to enjoy scenic views of the beautiful Italian countryside, as well as hearing some inspirational words of the early years of Francesco Forgione (the future Padre Pio). Stop en-route for some snacks/sandwiches (at your own expenses) at a service station before visiting to Pietrelcina.

Walk in the footsteps of Padre Pio in his quaint little town and learn about his dream of becoming “a monk with a beard” and visit the family home where Padre Pio was born and the Church of Sant’Anna where he was baptised. Mass will be celebrated in Pietrelcina.

We then continue to San Giovanni Rotondo, where we will stay at the Parco delle Rose Hotel for four nights. Accommodation includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily. Dinner and overnight after a first full day.

DAY 2 – Discovering the life & spirituality of St Pio

Today after breakfast, we will be spending the full day in San Giovanni, discovering the places associated to St Pio’s life and ministry. We will visit the Old Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the Capuchin Friary and the cell where St Pio lived. We will also see the crucifix before which he received the stigmata.

The programme will include a visit to the shrine and time for personal prayer at St Pio’s tomb. We will also learn about his extraordinary life and his dedication to prayer, confession and the spiritual guidance of pilgrims. A guided visit through the sanctuary’s English-language visitor services will also be organised.

In the afternoon, we will visit the Monumental Way of the Cross, a beautiful, wooded path featuring sculptures depicting the Stations of the Cross. We will return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 3 – Monte Sant’Angelo & The Vigil celebrations

After breakfast, we will travel to Monte Sant’Angelo to visit the celebrated Sanctuary of St Michael the Archangel, built around the cave traditionally associated with the apparitions of St Michael. The shrine has welcomed pilgrims and saints, including St Francis of Assisi. We will have time to explore the sanctuary and, celebrate Mass.

We will return to San Giovanni Rotondo in the afternoon, allowing time to prepare for the evening’s religious celebrations.

In the evening a Vigil of the Feast of St Pio will be celebrated. The evening will be kept free for participation in the official vigil celebrations at the shrine. In previous years, the programme has included communal prayer, the Rosary, Eucharistic celebrations and other liturgical services ahead of the feast day. The exact 2027 programme and timings will be confirmed closer to departure.

Day 4 – Solemn Feast of St Pio of Pietrelcina

Today is the highlight of our pilgrimage, as we celebrate the feast of St Pio in San Giovanni Rotondo on the anniversary of his death in 1968. The day will be dedicated to participation in the principal religious celebrations at the sanctuary.
Depending on the official programme, these may include solemn Masses, communal prayer and the procession in honour of St Pio through the town.

There will also be time for personal prayer, visiting the shrine and reflecting on the life and spiritual legacy of this much-loved saint.

As this is one of the busiest days of the year in San Giovanni Rotondo, the programme will remain flexible to allow the group to participate fully in the celebrations. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

DAY 5 – Last day

This is unfortunately our last day of this meaningful pilgrimage celebration St. Pio.

After breakfast and check out from the hotel, we will be traveling to Bari Airport for our return flight back to Dublin departing at 13:55pm.
