The jewel in the city’s crown is most definitely its Cathedral, the reputed burial place of Saint James the Great, the Apostle of Jesus Christ. Santiago de Compostela has been linked with St. James since 1063.

On this short break in Santiago de Compostela, you will take in the festivities of the annual Feast of St James on a very special year for Camino pilgrims, Xacobeo 2022; and get to explore and know this wonderful historic city.

The city of Santiago knows how to celebrate with this fantastic event! In the two weeks leading up to the day, there are exhibitions, concerts, drama productions and street entertainment. Closer to the day, there is something on almost every night in the Old Town’s main squares. On the evening of 24th July, in the Praza do Obradoiro, are the Fogos do Apóstol – an incredible display of pyrotechnics that sees the side of the cathedral dramatically illuminated at midnight. The feast day itself includes many official celebrations and processions, the most important of which is an official Mass attended by representatives of the Galician government and often by members of the Spanish Royal family.

The Botafumeiro will be swung during mass on the 25th July. Only 11 days of each year the Botafumeiro is swung for sure, St James Day being one of them.

DAY 1: Thursday 22nd July 2022
Make your way to Dublin airport for your flight to Santiago de Compostela. Transfer to your hotel and enjoy dinner with your group and rep.

DAY 2: Friday 23rd July 2022
This morning you will be taken by coach to Monte de Gozo on the edge of the city. For those who have walked the Camino route to Santiago, Monte de Gozo is where they get a first view of the city and the Cathedral’s famous spires. You will have the opportunity to walk a short section of the Camino leading to Monte de Gozo, or you can simply spend some time taking in the atmosphere and stunning scenery from the hilltop. Some might even choose to walk down into the city, however, the coach is available to drop you back if you would prefer. After some free time for lunch in the city, the group will come together again for an afternoon walking tour of Santiago de Compostela Old Town, in order to learn more about the city’s famous history and its stunning landmarks.

Day 3: Saturday 24th July 2022
Today you will have the day free to explore Santiago at your own pace. While some may choose to enjoy relaxing in the numerous coffee shops and parks, or strolling the beautiful cobbled streets, others may opt to go further afield. Day trips to Finisterre, the Cies Islands and Vigo are popular options which can be booked through local operators. Your Joe Walsh Tours representative can assist you with making a booking. Day 4 – St James Day, Sunday 25th July 2022
Today, the Feast of Saint James, Dia de Santiago as well as Galicia’s National Day so the streets of Santiago de Compostela come alive once more with locals and visitors.

The city is full of people watching the displays of different carnival groups, papier-mâché cabezudos and many Galician pipers. The dancing, music, eating and celebrating continues well into the next morning! Don’t forget to try some oysters or scallops, as Galicians believe that eating these on July 25th will ensure that the following year is full of wealth and health. The feast day itself also includes many official celebrations, the most important of which is an official Mass which is attended by representatives of the Galician government and often by members of the Spanish Royal family.

Day 5: Monday 26th July 2022
On your last morning you will have some more time to soak up the atmosphere of the city, as the return flight to Dublin is expected to be around 5pm, so the group will be transferred to the airport around 2pm.
